چکیده

Introduction Epilepsy is a disorder in which the nerve cells of the brain produce abnormal electrical impulses causing transient paroxysmal disturbances in the nervous system function known as seizures (1). Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common type of partial epilepsy in adults and is commonly characterized by hippocampal sclerosis. Hippocampal sclerosis is manifested in a pattern of neuronal loss and gliosis with secondary atrophy within the hippocampus. When the amygdala and parahippocampal gyrus are also involved, the disorder is termed mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS) (2).

CAUSES OF INTRACTABLE SEIZURES IN A SURVEY OF 10,000 EPILEPTIC CHILDREN

Although treated properly for epilepsy, a number of epileptic children have intractable seizures and about 5-10 per cent of them do not respond to anti -epileptic drugs. In the years 1986-1996 about 10,000 epileptic patients were treated in the Children's Medical Center in Tehran. A retrospective study of their medical records revealed that 41 of them had intractable seizures. I Of these 4...

Stochastic Algorithms for White Matter Fiber Tracking and the Inference of Brain Connectivity from MR Diffusion Tensor Data

We consider several stochastic algorithms for fiber tracking and compute the connectivity matrix from data obtained by magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging of the living human brain.

Fiber Tractography and Diffusion Tensor Imaging in Children with Agenesis and Dysgenesis of Corpus Callosum: A Clinico-Radiological Correlation

Background Corpus callosum is the largest commissure in human brain. It consists of tightly packed white matter tracts connecting the two cerebral hemispheres.  In this study we aimed to evaluate role of fiber tractography (FT), and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in ped...

Altered Functional and Structural Connectivity Networks in Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures

Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) are paroxysmal behaviors that resemble epileptic seizures but lack abnormal electrical activity. Recent studies suggest aberrant functional connectivity involving specific brain regions in PNES. Little is known, however, about alterations of topological organization of whole-brain functional and structural connectivity networks in PNES. We constructed f...

Towards inference of human brain connectivity from MR diffusion tensor data

This paper describes a method to infer the connectivity induced by white matter fibers in the living human brain. This method stems from magnetic resonance tensor imaging (DTI), a technique which gives access to fiber orientations. Given typical DTI spatial resolution, connectivity is addressed at the level of fascicles made up by a bunch of parallel fibers. We propose first an algorithm dedica...
